Tim Berners-Lee

He is currently working as a Computer Science professor at the University of Oxford.

Linus Torvalds

He has been listed as one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Linus is the genius mind behind the  Linux kernel operating system. At the young age of 21, he mentioned it in his thesis titled ‘Linux: A Portable Operating System.' He brought revolution in the IT sector through this development, and the kernel was used for the Operating systems, such as Android, Linux OS, Chrome OS which made him the renowned programmers across the globe. He was born in Helsinki, Finland and completed his post graduation in computer science from the University of Helsinki. So later, he bought a PC, Sinclair QL, modified its OS, and programmed its text editor, assembly language, and some games. Now he owns the Linux trademark and has been appointed as one of the highest authorities to decide the incorporation of new codes. There is even asteroid and asteroid moon named after him. The total number of patents on his name are 35. In 2012, he said that his major contribution to the Linux kernel involves merging codes that were written by someone else and wasn’t part of programming much. He has worked as a chief architect for Linux kernel operating system and presently is the main coordinator of the same project.

Bill Gates

We all know about this American business magnate who is the co-founder of the largest PC software company, Microsoft. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, and was competitive from the young age. While studying at the Lakeside School, he developed an interest in computing and wrote his first computer software program at the young age of 13.

He collaborated with Paul Allen, his senior at the school and started a venture named Traf-O-Data, where they made traffic counters which were based on the Intel 8008 processor. Furthermore, he scored 1590 out of 1600 in his SAT exams and got enrolled at Harvard College. He was not much interested in any subject other than the computer so Allen, who also became his future business partner, suggested him to drop out of the college. In 1975, both Bill Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft which was initially known as Micro-Soft. They adapted BASIC, a programming language, which proved to be successful and hereon, they continued to develop various programming language software for systems. This company made him a renowned entrepreneur over the years and had been ranked as the wealthiest person in the world consecutively.

James Gosling

Unlike Bill Gates, Gosling finished his college and obtained his Ph.D. in computer science. Born in 1955 in Canada, he completed his graduation in BSc from the University of Calgary. While working on his thesis, he created the Emacs text editor for Unix (Gosmacs). He is also the mind behind multi-processor version of Unix and various other compilers. It was in the early 1990s that he started to work on a project code-named Green which eventually became Java. The primary objective of this project was to create a software that had the ability to run on various computing devices and wouldn’t have to be customized every time. Although most of the technology discovered under the Green was not much successful, some of its principles had the potential to be useful in the internet age. Sun Microsystem, where he works as a chief technology officer for developer product group, launched Java in 1995. Gosling was the one to design it originally and also implemented its virtual machine and original compiler. He is popularly known as the father of the Java programming language. The first programming language which was designed keeping the internet in mind and had the highly distributed applications.
